Toyota Introduces Lexus
Honda led the way to Japanese luxury vehicles with the introduction of Acura and Nissan and Toyota both followed suit with their own brand of luxury cars. Lexus is part of the global Toyota family and grew quickly. Barely twelve years after its founding, Lexus became America's best-selling line of luxury vehicles.
In 1983 Toyota?s decision to build a luxury line of vehicles came to life and by 1985 the first LS 400 running prototypes were built. Tested extensively on the Autobahn in Germany as well as on American roads in 1986, the final design of the LS 400 was approved in 1987 for production.
Unveiling at the Detroit and LA Auto Shows
Lexus unveiled the LS 400 as well as the ES 250 to the world at the Detroit and Los Angeles auto shows in January of 1989 and both vehicles went on sale by September of that same year. By January of 1990 the LS 400 was named Car and Driver 10 Best. Motoring Press named the LS 400 Best Imported Car of the Year. This was the beginning of their climb to the top with Lexus winning top honors and awards and gaining recognition for their quality, luxury and superior customer satisfaction.
Lexus Builds on their Brand
Lexus has continued to produce high quality luxury cars over the years. In 1995, for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year, Lexus ranked #1 Carline in the J.D. Power and Associates Customer Satisfaction Study. In 1996 they introduced the LX 450 a luxury sport utility vehicle and only two months after introduction, it surpassed Range Rover in units sold. In 1998 they introduced another SUV, the RX 300 along with a more powerful LX 470, creating the ultimate luxury SUV line. Also, in this same time they introduced a more powerful GS line with the V8 powered GS 400 joining the GS 300. Still earning top honors with each stride, in 2003 for the seventh consecutive year, J.D. Power and associates Initial Quality Study names the LS the Highest Ranked Premium Luxury Car and the RX the Highest Ranked Luxury Sport Utility Vehicle.
